The Death of Kalypso is a surreal, genre-busting opera, where the jazz group Angles meets strings and singer Elle-Kari Sander. Timeless melodies meet explosive improvisation and warped drone. Ancient myths and timeless themes meet contemporary issues. The music and libretto are written by the composer/musician Martin Küchen, the arrangements are by pianist Alex Zethson, and the whole thing is performed by high-octane musicians who together create a stage performance with high density. At the center of it all: singer Elle-Kari Sander, one of the most interesting and noted vocalists of our time, whose voice carries the songs like clear stars in an oceanic night.
The work was premiered in the summer of 2023 at the Summer Bummer festival in Antwerp and the project has since played a number of gigs in Sweden and an acclaimed performance at the prestigious Roadburn festival in the Netherlands, where a reviewer described it as “[a] moving concert where the chemistry of this Swedish jazz collective can be felt under the skin, stylishly and with Sanders’ role naturally integrated into the orchestra” (Devilution.dk).
The album The Death of Kalyspo was released on Thanatosis in the spring of 2024 and won first prize at the Manifestgalan 2025 in the jazz category.
