Rörane Studio is located at the end of a road, on a hill, far from other buildings. From a distance, the place appears to lie on the horizon, on a thin membrane between the earth below and the sky above. A gap. There are a large number of petroglyphs on the bedrock. The firmament is large. From the studio windows, a larger burial ground can be seen, where perhaps Bohuslän’s strangest rock carvings are found, the so-called birdmen. The area has a long cultural history and has been inhabited since at least 3000 years ago. In other words; it is an excellent place to delve into the concept of “genius loci”, the spirit of the place.
The studio is built in one half of a barn building. At the other end, a sawmill has been built. All timber for the reconstruction has been taken down from the surrounding forest and sawn into timber in the sawmill. The large windows are site-built from pine and a batch of insulating glass. The studio is well insulated with cellulose insulation. All paint is made according to old recipes. Only a fraction of all material is purchased via the building materials industry. On the roof is a solar cell plant that produces 12,000 kW/year. The floor, the working surface, is 120 square meters and constructed in such a way that there is no dull point, which gives an even failure over the entire floor surface. The material is pine that has been planed and chipped in the sawmill. The ceiling height is 6.5 meters. Processing and reshaping the neighboring nature is a supporting thought, a natural flow of life that is organized into a form, i.e. the basic idea of culture.
The work floor can be completely covered by a vinyl dance mat, Harlekin Duo, black on one side, white on the other. There is a sound and lighting system, grand piano, piano, pedal organ and percussion. If necessary, the entire studio can be covered, in whole or in part, with black light-resistant fabric, into a black box. On the stand is a soundproof studio room with a window facing the large room.
Rörane Studio is built with the idea of being able to give space to creative processes of various kinds, a place where you can penetrate deeper into a work without being disturbed by demands and external expectations. From the beginning, it was mainly intended as a rehearsal space for theater and dance. During the course of the work, it has turned out that the acoustics have become special, which makes the venue suitable for musicians, both for recording music albums and for concerts. The steady light from the large windows in the north means that the room is also suitable for image, film and photography practitioners and as an exhibition space. A number of residency periods have been completed, mainly in dance, music and theatre. Around twelve concerts are organized each year. It is possible to provide space for approx. 80 – 100 spectators/listeners.
In 2025, work will begin on building a kitchen department and accommodation room/house directly adjacent to the studio. Today, the adjacent residential building fulfills these functions.
With the studio, and later the guest apartments/houses, Rörane Studio, with its secluded location and the history of the place, functions as a sanctuary where the conditions exist to penetrate and immerse oneself in creative processes, both as practitioners and spectators/listeners.
