Helena Franzén has been an uncompromising and consistent voice in the art of dance during her extensive career, where since the 1990s she has developed a unique and personal movement language.
She has tirelessly created dance performances that highlight dance as an autonomous art form, with an artistic integrity that is constantly present, regardless of where and how the works are presented.
Helena Franzén has a strong and distinctive voice in Swedish dance.
Helena Franzén has over 35 years of experience working as a dancer and choreographer. She has created over 100 stage works that have toured nationally and internationally both under her own direction and as commissions for institutions such as: Skånes Dansteater, Göteborgsoperans danskompani, Norrdans, The Edge, Nytt Dansk Dansteater.
Helena Franzén is a sought-after teacher and mentor and she regularly teaches at many different dance educations around the world.
Helena Franzén is a choreographer dedicated to the boundless variety of movement whose signature is characterized by the precision in movement quality and expression. Her work is often described with words such as physical intelligence, movement poetry with nerve and presence, descriptions that clarify her place in the Swedish dance landscape. Recurring themes are about memory, how they take place and what they do to us, about the impact of place and about phenomena that affect our measured time.
In recent years, her work has expanded to other places and spaces through collaborations with, among others, Norrköping Art Museum, Uppsala Art Museum and Västernorrlands Museum.
Helena works with composers who write music for her works and has an ongoing collaboration with musician and composer Jukka Rintamäki, who has created nearly fifteen works. She also collaborates with the composer, Emma Augustsson, Stefan Johansson and has over the years also worked with Sten Sandell, Fagge Fagerström and Jenny Wilson.
For ten years, Helena Franzén has created films together with the photographer and filmmaker Håkan Jelk. Most of their films have been presented at international dance film festivals.
Helena Franzén was awarded the DANCE PRIZE by the Cooperation Council for Regional Dance Development in 2024.
Lisen Rylander Löve
The Gothenburg-based saxophonist Lisen Rylander Löve is internationally active and a well-established name in Swedish jazz, improvisation and experimental music. She is active in many different constellations, including the jazz quartets The Splendor and Here’s To Us, with whom she has released several acclaimed albums. Lisen is a constantly exploratory musician and artist, and in 2019 she released her first solo album OCEANS, where she creates her evocative sound worlds by mixing acoustic instruments such as saxophone, voice and kalimba with field recordings and live electronics. For twelve years she was part of the electronica group Midaircondo, which received great attention both in Sweden and internationally for its genre-crossing music and visual concerts. Over the years, she has received several prizes and awards for her music, including the Monica Zetterlund Scholarship, Manifest and Sveriges Radio P2 Jazzkatten. Lisen also composes music for dance, theater and film.
Karin Johansson is a pianist and composer within a broad spectrum of improvisational music, free jazz and contemporary music. She works with alternative techniques/prepared piano, among other things.
Active in several groups and collaborations, both in Sweden and internationally.
Also composes and performs scenic music for dance and theater, most recently the dance performance Retrograd with Mer Dans Åt Folket.
Karin is based in Gothenburg but was born and raised in Malmö. She is educated at the Gothenburg Academy of Music and Drama.
In June 2024, Karin played at Rörane Studio with Christer Bothén and Quagmire (Karin/ Nina de Heney/ Henrik Wartel).
Lisen Rylander Löve and Karin Johansson have been a duo for several years and have released the album ARTER (Havtorn records).
