Iiris Viljanen – Cross-border jazz pianist where playful improvisation meets sensitive depths
With roots in contemporary jazz and the free form of expression in her instrumental piano album So Much of You Was Sleeping (released in the fall of 2025), Viljanen’s music moves freely between composition and improvisation.
Each concert is a unique experience where the works are allowed to breathe, change and sometimes take completely new paths. On stage, Viljanen often creates new themes in real time, in an intuitive interplay between time, sound and space. Here, dangling grooves meet magical landscapes and spontaneous exploration. Structures unfold as conversations, and sometimes a wordless song sneaks forward like a whisper.
Iiris Viljanen has previously released five solo albums, including the critically acclaimed Själsligt uppvakande vid Slussen (2024), nominated for a Grammis and named one of the best Swedish albums of the year according to Dagens Nyheter. Her captivating stage presence has been praised by both audiences and critics. With the new piano album, she begins a new artistic chapter.
