Mattias Risberg’s ensemble “Mining” started in 2018 and has since released four albums.
Each individual musician then puts their personal touch on the music that is played. Ingredients are from jazz and classical, and with deviations towards both prog and symphonic rock, such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Igor Stravinsky, King Crimson and Genesis. With joint forces, spiced with spontaneous whims and a large measure of curiosity, the group breaks new musical ground in its own way. Together they create something completely unique.
The thoroughly composed music is written by Risberg, who draws his inspiration from the progressive rock music of the 70s, art rock, modernist art music, jazz and folk music. Fine voices, ensembles and brilliant solo performances distinguish the music and there is a complex rhythm with rapid time signature changes. Each piece is like a journey, you are with it the whole time. The tangible freedom and openness of the music, despite its form, is made possible by the fact that it is performed by musicians familiar with improvisation. As a whole, it has quite little to do with jazz. Yet the music is given that unmistakable feeling that only jazz musicians can achieve.
The band has been praised in both Swedish and international press for their ingenious compositions, dizzying improvisations and spontaneous whims.
They have performed in both post-industrial environments such as mining areas, cabins etc. and at jazz clubs and festivals.
The band comes in different sizes and formations. Now they are doing a tour in April 2025 with the following line-up:
