Bread and Roses is the first seminar in the series “What is sustainable – really”, a seminar series about economic and ecological crises, austerity policies and the myths of the government deficit. The seminars include food, music and poetry, perhaps.
The cultural sector is – as everyone knows – chronically underfunded. This creates problems for artists as well as for artists’ organizations, cultural associations and institutions. In the seminar we examine why this is so and ask the question whether it could be otherwise.
Peo Hansen is a professor of political science at Linköping University and a Research Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence. He is also a representative of the modern monetary theory, MMT.
What is money, really? Every social problem has a price tag. Therefore, the question is often asked in public discourse how we will “afford” to finance healthcare, schools, culture, defense or climate change, etc. However, the question is wrongly posed and is due to an unfortunate misconception about what money actually is. The Swedish state cannot run out of Swedish kronor. However, Sweden can run out of what the money is supposed to pay for, such as artists and cultural workers, teachers, nurses and engineers, etc. This is where the real shortage of resources and the great societal challenge lies. Johan Öberg will also be participating with different perspectives on Swedish and French cultural policy.
