With an incredible singing voice and charisma, Marie-Claude Lambert-Philéas and Votia uncover the depth of the Maloya music from Reunion, a musical tradition that has been passed down through generations, a tradition that is also a source of political opposition to French colonial power. In Votia’s music, the tradition lives on with strong polyphonic singing and trance-inducing rhythms. Influences can be heard from both Indian music and traditional music from different parts of the African continent. Maloya is often described as the blues from Reunion, an expression of oppression and pain, but in Votia’s music, the joy of life still triumphs.
After the concert at Rörane Studio, the Group continues to the Roskilde Festival.
