Spiritual jazz, hypnotic guitar and Ethiopian roots in beautiful harmony.
With trance-inducing guitar meditations and soulful vocals, Esy Tadesse opens up an evocative journey into Ethiopian musical traditions.
The mini-album Ahadu from 2024 was created in collaboration with Grammy-winning producer and pianist Kibrom Birhane. The album offers a diverse mix of ethiojazz, with its scales, rhythms, history and its corporeal spirit à la Hailu Mergia and Mulatu Astatke, swirling flute improvisations and crisp synth sounds. Esy Tadesse’s vocals are often dreamingly wordless, leaving plenty of room for her desert-bluesy guitar playing. Moods shift from intimate playfulness to Moroccan gnawa, and on to light-hearted bossa nova melancholy. Those who don’t get the chance to see her at Rörane Studio during the Clandestino Festival must not despair, another opportunity will be offered at the Roskilde Festival.
Arranged together with Clandestino Festival.
